Thyes Shaub moved to Alaska in 1975 with her husband Rusty. She graduated from Washington State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry. Thyes was a science and math teacher in Washington and Alaska for 5 years. She moved to Juneau in 1985 to work as a Director in the Department of Commerce and Economic Development. In 1988, she became a Government Affairs Consultant and lobbyist representing Alaska business interests until retiring in 2012. She and her husband Rusty were partners in the flightseeing business, Wings Airways, from 2001 to 2019.
Thyes served on the Southeast Alaska Food Bank Board for 14 years primarily as their Fundraising Chair. Her current jewelry business stemmed from creating jewelry items for charity auctions. She is a member of the Juneau Artists Gallery.
Thyes and Rusty have two children, Colleen McCowan and Scott Shaub and grandchildren, Madeline and Henry McCowan.
