Born in Milan, Italy and educated in California, Sandro obtained a bachelor’s degree in marine biology from UC Berkeley in 1978. He immediately drove to Alaska and has lived in Juneau since. Continuing his education, Lane obtained his master’s degree in fisheries at the University of Alaska-Juneau, in 1982.
In 1982, Sandro launched Taku Smokeries. He became aware of the impact seafood discards had on the marine environment. In January of 2003, Sandro started his second company, Alaska Protein Recovery (APR), utilizing seafood waste and biotech to create products for human consumption.
In 2012, Sandro sold APR and joined the Foundation. Since 2015, he has retired and divided his time between Italy and Juneau. In May of 2016, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate Degree by the University of Alaska, Southeast and was adopted into the Alaska Innovators Hall of Fame.
Today, Sandro remains an engaged director of the Juneau Community Foundation.
