The Youth Equity Endowment is focused on building a fund that provides the opportunity for all local kids to participate in cultural, artistic, athletic or academic activities regardless of economic status. Our goal is to increase local philanthropy for positive near and long term impacts on youth and improve the participation rate for low-income families. By joining other like-minded people, you can help build funds to support youth activities, today and in the future.
We did our research. In 2018, over 1,400 Juneau students lived in poverty, and the pandemic has only exacerbated the problem. Equity and access are at the heart of the Foundation’s commitment to Juneau’s youth. We believe in providing positive opportunities for all children. Based on input from community members, we’ve prioritized making sure all students can participate in our many youth activities and camps that build confidence, promote school success, connect kids with each other, adults, and a world of possibilities.
Through the Youth Equity Endowment, individuals and businesses can pool their resources to achieve greater community impact by targeting barriers to participation – cost, food, transportation, gear, and outreach.
Grantmaking
We have teamed up with Zach Gordon Youth Center to distribute funds annually. Zach Gordon already had a system in place for distributing funding to youth. They agreed to take on the additional funds from us to augment the assistance they provide youth. By providing significantly more scholarship funding and working with our partners to enroll eligible students and help address transportation issues, we are able to increase low-income student participation. Since 2020, $45,000 in grants have assisted more than 265 low-income students with participating in local youth activities, and camps. 95% of these grants supported children who were eligible for free and reduced lunch. Let’s make sure more kids get a chance to engage and succeed.
Fund Development and Fee
People and businesses can donate any amount to this fund at any time. Those who wish to leave a personal or family legacy can create a named Youth Equity Fund, e.g., the John and Jane Doe Youth Equity Endowment. The Foundation charges a 1% fee to administer and build the Fund and carry out annual grant making.
