The Juneau Mountain Bike Alliance (JMBA) is planning to build an all-level (“progressive”) mountain bike skills park off of the Under Thunder Trail at the end of Jennifer Drive. The project is on CBJ land and we went through the PRAC process and are now fully approved to build on this site to the standards CBJ has set out for us.
This project will include rehabilitation of the existing trails as well as the construction of new trails. Design and construction will focus on inclusivity. The skill level will run from kids/green circle trails up to black diamond/advanced trails and include a dirt jump line with jumps of various difficulty levels and sizes. The overall design of the park will foster a safe and fun way for riders to progress. JMBA is working with Southeast Alaska Assisted Living (SAIL) about how to make the park handicapped and disabled persons accessible.
The location of this project was chosen because this part of the valley has an underserved population when it comes to bike-specific trails. Most of Juneau’s current mountain bike trails are located downtown or on Douglas, where most of the builders live. There is demand in the valley and many new riders are using the Under Thunder trails, even in their current undeveloped state. The surrounding neighborhood has a school and many families with younger children. The bike park will provide a safe and healthy recreational opportunity for neighborhood residents. Trails in other parts of town are social gathering places where people recreate and make new friends; JMBA hopes to build another successful hub in the Under Thunder zone.
