We need your support for an evening of history, honor, and hope at Centennial Hall. Renowned artist and UAS Northwest Coast Studio Arts Professor, Lily Hope, presents a weavers gathering and multi-media event about Yeil Koowu, Ravenstail Robes.
All funds raised through the Juneau Community Foundation will be used to ensure this event is live-streamed and recorded for posterity.
Ravenstail techniques ‘slept’ for 100 years, until researcher Cheryl Samuel, woke them up by researching the few historic robes housed around the world. One of her students, Kay Parker of Juneau, has taught with historical integrity and kindness for over 40 years now, motivating hundreds of students to share stories and identities through geometric woolen weavings. There will be a weavers gathering and demonstration with the archival photographer to record the physical and communal process of weaving to create a coffee table book of Ravenstail robes. Then we come together for the main event where we will teach the audience the history of Ravenstail, honor Kay and Cheryl for their continued love stewardship of this art, and feature the TCLL (Tlingit Culture, Language, Literacy) class dancing a collection of over 24 newly created child-sized Ravenstail robes in preparation for the Juneau Douglas City Museum Show titled “Yeilk’: Ravenstail Regalia for Our Future Clan Leaders.
The future of Yeil Koowu is in good hands. Help us bring these robes together and join us on Tuesday, April 30th, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:30 PM
Your donation is your virtual ‘ticket’ to be WITH US across the miles.
Gunalchéesh for your support.
