The newly-created Alaska News Coalition is an all-volunteer non-profit formed to address the economic challenges facing every remaining newspaper in the state.
Rising costs, declining readership, advertising revenue losses, and the dominance of social media have led to the demise of the local newspaper nationwide. Alaska is no exception.
The Alaska News Coalition is a group of journalists, educators, newspaper owners, and supporters of quality news and information formed to assess the needs of every newsroom in the state to develop and structure a plan of shared resources. The aim is to collectively solve the problems facing Alaska’s newspapers with shared reporting and photography, business and legal services, and the expertise and technology involved in the transition from print to online.
Local news is essential to maintaining an informed and productive civil discourse in Alaska. Seward and Valdez lost their newspapers long ago. Large and small papers across the state have dwindled in size and distribution. The Alaska News Coalition’s goal is simple: to ensure no other community in the state loses its local newspaper.
