Juneau Arts and Culture Center

Dramatically framed by the mountains and the sea, the New Juneau Arts and Culture Center
(New JACC) will become the focal point for individual and communal artistic expression in the
Capital City.

Located downhill from the Alaska State Legislature and Capitol, it will provide one of the first
impressions of Alaska to over 1 million visitors a year as they approach Juneau by sea. The
Center is in the heart of Juneau’s emerging Cultural District, within walking distance of the
Andrew P. Kashavaroff State Library, Archives and Museum, the iconic Walter Soboleff
Building, KTOO Public Media Center, the Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall and tribal headquarters,
and the Sea Walk, connecting all of downtown Juneau with a lifesize bronze whale sculpture.

Now in the final design phase, the New JACC features stunning views of Mt. Roberts and Mt.
Juneau captured through large windows and an outdoor courtyard adjacent to Centennial Hall.
The Center’s main entrance will be on Whittier Street, enabling easy visits to the APK State
Library, Archives and Museum across the street. Accessibility by car with a pull-out, a wide
overhang to protect people from wind and rain as they enter and exit, and outdoor tables were
features promoted by local citizens during community meetings in the design stage.

The New JACC will be approximately 37,000 square feet total and will include:

  • A 300 seat theater
  • A visual arts gallery
  • A community hall
  • An event studio for smaller productions
  • A small, ventilated closet for a grand piano (fundraisers ongoing by local pianists)
  • A small café and gift shop
  • A seminar room for classes and workshops
  • A sound studio, and
  • A suite of offices on the second floor

The acoustically fine-tuned 300 seat theater will feature both orchestra and balcony seating with
ample wings on both sides for entry and exit and an orchestra pit. A back of house scene shop,
green room, dressing rooms and sound studio will provide support for performances.

A new community hall will replace the “Main Hall” in the current JACC and will be the venue
for a wide variety of community events, including: celebrations, markets, trade shows,
performances and gatherings of all sorts.

The design features a spacious lobby area/reception hall to welcome visitors, provide for ticket
sales and be a gathering place for many functions. Flowing from the lobby is the gift shop – a
venue for sales by local artists and crafts people – a café, and the Visual Arts Gallery. Up a flight
of stairs or accessible by elevator is the balcony to the theater and a suite of 8 offices to be used
by arts organizations, non-profits and small businesses.
